Overview

a. In the last decade Rijkswaterstaat spent increasing effort in improving the safety of motorway tunnels in the Netherlands. Acccidents in tunnels, and particularly fires, can have dramatic consequences and can prove extremely costly in terms of human life, increased congestion, pollution and repair costs.

Functional safety is the term that is used for safety measures that rely on the correct functioning of dedicated safety-critical HW/SW-systems. International standards such as IEC-61508 are available to make sure that these safety-critical systems can be demonstrated to have a certain safety level.
